3D/4D Pregnancy Bonding Scans

What is a 3D/4D Bonding Scan?

Click to play.

A pregnancy bonding scan is an optional scan that provides a beautiful bonding experience for parents, family, and friends.

These scans allow you to see your baby using a special scanning and video-capture technology.

Like regular ultrasounds, 3D/4D ultrasounds use sound waves to create an image of your baby in your womb. 3D ultrasounds create a three-dimensional "photograph" image of your baby, while 4D ultrasounds create a live video effect, like a movie -- you can watch your baby smile or yawn.

To get the best views of your baby, this scan should be best performed between 28 and 32 weeks.

Fees & Time Required

Since this is not a medical scan, you do not need a doctor's referral for this scan- you can simply book your scan with us as an add on to your regular growth scan, or as a separate scan by itself.

  • 3D/4D bonding scan add on ( Select as option at Growth Scan ) - $200
  • 3D/4D bonding scan only - 20mins / $375

About 3D/4D Ultrasounds

4D scans are video motion-captures, like a movie.
What is a 3D/4D Ultrasound?

3D/4D ultrasounds display a 3D view of your baby in real-time allowing you to see your baby move. 4D means 3D in motion

What is a 3D/4D Bonding Scan?

This is a non-medical scan that provides a maternal bonding experience for parents, family, and friends. To get the best views of your baby, this scan should be best performed between 28 and 32 weeks.

How much does it cost?

We offer 2 services for 3D/4D bonding scans.

You can choose to have the scan performed immediately after your 3rd trimester growth scan. The additional cost of this scan is $200 including images to your phone or email. This add on option is only available when you book in for a growth scan in the booking widget. Family members and friends are welcome to join you too.

You can also have a standalone 3D/4D scan which will cost $375 including images to your phone or email. It is a requirement that you must have already had a previous anatomy scan. The scan time will be approximately 20 minutes. Again family members and friends are welcome to join you too.

What if you can't get a clear view of my baby?

We have the latest Philips 3D/4D technology for capturing great views of your baby. However, there are times when baby's position, position of the umbilical cord, baby's hands or a lack of fluid around the baby can prevent us from getting good images of baby's face.

We acknowledge the fact that it is not always possible to achieve the right images on the first try therefore we may accommodate a second attempt during your follow on scan with us. We may sometimes ask you to go for a short walk to try and get the baby to move. If that fails we will try to get some images of other parts of baby such as feet and hands.

Do I need a referral?

No. This scan can be performed without a referral as it is a non medical scan and simply a chance for parents, family, and friends to bond with baby. If you are having the 3D/4D scan as part of your 3rd trimester growth scan, you will still need a referral for the growth scan.

Cancellation Policy

Our Cancellation Policy applies to all appointments. You must confirm or cancel your appointment at least 4 business hours prior.

Terms and Conditions

We will endeavour to provide you with a memorable bonding experience with your baby. We also ask that you please agree to the following terms and conditions related to 3D4D ultrasounds scans performed at Lux Radiology before we can perform your scan:

  • If you are having a 3rd trimester 3D/4D scan, you confirm that you have had a 20-week anatomy scan performed for this pregnancy.
  • You accept that payment for this 3D/4D ultrasound scan covers the bonding experience for yourself and any present family members or friends, not just the images you are given to take with you.
  • You accept that you may not necessarily receive a clear view of baby's face due to a number of factors, such as the position of the baby, hands or umbilical cord covering baby’s face, lack of fluid around the baby's face, or extra maternal tissue that may distort the image.

Booking Ultrasound Services

  1. You need a referral from your health professional to be able to book an appointment for an ultrasound. You can upload or email your referral from our booking page.
  2. Scans must be booked in advance, online. Click the Booking button below.
  3. If you have previous scans which are relevant, please bring them with you. This may reduce the number of scans or other tests you need and improve the accuracy of the report.

How to prepare for the test

Your preparation is important, and will depend on the part of the body being examined. Upon booking refer to Step 3 for instructions on preparation for your scan.

How long will my scan take?

Please note that all timings are estimates only. Scanning times may vary due to operator and patient factors. We allocate the time indicated however many scans do not require the full time given.

However, some obstetric scans can take longer than expected , for example Anatomy scans where the baby's position obstructs some of the views required to complete the scan; or complex pelvic scans. This added scanning work also requires additional time for reporting.

In these situations, we reserve the right to charge an extended scanning fee of $50 if additional time ( up to 10 min ) is required to complete the scan. This can potentially avoid us having to rebook for a follow up scan and therefore save patients additional time and effort to return for another scan. You will be advised at the time of your scan if this charge is necessary.
